The exhibited works have however the particularity to be neither paintings, sculptures, photography, and do not have any relation with the afore-mentioned medias, because, in their creative process, they burn. Mike Chanfreut has the passion of fire and offers, in his action, a surprising show, together gestural and visual : myriads of lights, dancing and fearless flakes of fire, undisciplined sparks wandering and altering the support, twirls of clouds and essence of nectar accompanying the work in process, between fusion and metamorphosis.
Work that could be qualified as metamorphic – event though it here refers to wood instead of rocks -, where solids and fluids conjugated, submitted to the
test of fire, go under transformation. The composing elements, gasoline, wine, - “black gold and the blood of earth”, says the artist -, wood, coloured powders, varnishes, partially burn away, get transformed, evaporate, char, according to the will and the intervention of the author, joyous firework maker. He does not hesitate to repeat the process until he obtains a kind of magma, which surface is at one time puffed up, bulging, rough, sprinkled with gold particles, at another time reflecting like a mirror, with open scars, showing the web of the raw wood.
The approach is totally original. Story of red and black, of wine and fire, of solid and liquid, of warmth and coldness, of light and dark, of brilliance and opacity, the opposites strain until partial break and destruction.
The fire is heating, warming up, illuminating, purifying, destroying, like the wine is enjoying, censing, making euphoric, evaporating and the varnishes are running, like the rivers, where Narcissus can face his image, and plunge his eyes with delight.
